Communication….

Found this one while going thru a bunch of CDs. The alien is not doing what you think, he’s missing the tip of his finger and is in pain. Don’t ask me how he lost it. The character with the helmet thinks the whole thing is funny. So this represents communication gone wrong… The picture was for Mark Martin’s (not the race car driver) “Draw with Me” activity, it was fun while it lasted….

For IllustrationFriday.com I thought I’d goof around and have the creature make rain, (just a little) out his mouth. Anyway it’s finished….

Finally started getting all those scans sorted and up on the site… Check for the Angry Street Magician, who for 10 minutes just yelled about how NYC was better then Philly, then did some really bad slight of hand tricks. Then did the ‘pull the long rag out of my hand trick’ which was followed by burning himself with a lit cigarette. Then he yelled some more, and asked us for money. I threw him a buck, only because I stood there snapping shots with the Holga.

For all you Polaroid lovers out there, I added a gallery of Polaroid images taken with a 1938 Speed Graphic 4×5.. you know the one’s you see in the old movies? That one.. I happened to have one handy at a party, and couldn’t help but see if we could get it to work.. it did.

Expanded Street gallery coming soon, soon as I get the scans goin’ and for you car nuts, there will be a new collection of the infamous Gt3 Porsche.

Oh, and I noticed that the nicnichols.com font has been downloaded close to 1,000 times- so if you used it in something cool (but of course, not commercial…) send me a jpeg! Best use gets a free 12″ print of your choice. Really.

More Acrylic

This feels pretty quite, tranquil anyway. It’s another acrylic job. I’ve always liked painting birds, though I don’t know why.. full painting plus a detail shot.

Just found this card with my signature from back when I did this Greedo trading card for Topps, so I hope no one minds my posting it again, this scan shows a little more detail, so I figured “what the heck”…here ya go…. and for the Illustration Friday folks I guess this is a sacrifice or sorts? Probably not, but someone is getting slaughtered anyway…..

I thought clowns were bad.. but I ran across these two statues in this field, so I thought I would get some Holga grabs of them.. after I shot a few frames they seemed to be just about to speak, and I started to feel sick.. needless to say I was off in a hurry, but got a bunch of images to put up this week.

More update and links this week, as well as version 2.o of the nicnichols.com font!

Another Oldie

For the folks coming in from Illustration Friday, here’s a skyline that’s out of this world, it’s on the moon!
This is an oldie, from back when I was painting in acrylic. It’s the “Grand Lunar” from “First Men in the Moon” movie from the ’60’s, I had a lot of fun doing this one and ended up using it as a self-promo. The original ended up with one of the guys from Topps Trading Cards….

I painted this in the early 90s, when I was doing acrylics on a regular basis, now if I get that much time to do any traditional brush work, I usually don’t have all the time to get that in depth, but I’m working on it. By the way, this was never finished so the torso is a little rough and yes that’s Cindy Crawford….

How many locations can you squeeze into one weekend? A lot if you don’t sleep..
after a marathon 18 hours yesterday, we are ready for day two of our GT3 shoot-a-thon..
Why? Its for sale, so we are getting as many shots as we can to remember it by.. (and pad our portfolios with…) I will update the site this week with new auto images, as well as a few new galleries that I finally got around to scanning.. but here is one image from the D200 Nikon, (ya, I know this is an all film site, but we wanted to make sure we got something before the rent-a-cop kicked us out of the parking garage..)

Non Compos Mentis

Boy, talk about opposites! Ever have a day like this? I was talking with my son Jeff this evening about MIB (men in black) and aliens so I remembered this piece done for the band “Non Compos Mentis” CD cover.
I also made a bunch of stickers and found out when given the choice between this and other stickers I did, little kids really dig this art. So you never know……

Another doodle from last weekend that I got to finishing up tonight.

Also, I will be doing some more chalk art this upcoming weekend as part of the Ordway Center’s 2006 Flint Hills International Children’s Festival in scenic downtown St. Paul. I only had time to take one shift on Sunday, June 4th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Hope to see you there.
