Say Hello To Our Little Friends, Part II
As some of you may already know, we have an affinity for these lil guys. It’s probably a combination of the bright colors, elfin size, and limited production that make us go gaga for toys… Yes, I said toys. There is much debate in the designer vinyl industry (did I just say industry?) about whether or not designer figures ought to be termed “toys.” The fact that these little objects are often designed by renowned artists & designers with plenty of self esteem has warranted the term “designer vinyl” to trump the usage of the otherwise lackluster and embarrassing word toy. I say f-word that idea. The moment that these things stop being considered toys is the moment that I loose interest in the whole thing. What’s wrong with toys? What’s wrong with grown-ups reminiscing about opening the box of a new toy? Sure, these figures are often a form of collectible art, and sure they are not approved by child safety hazard requirements, but they are still toys: Small, ornate figures collected and adored for the purpose of fun and personal enjoyment. I’m an adult, but I’m not embarrassed to be fascinated by small plastic objects with absurd faces. I laugh every time I look at my dusty shelf of creatures and all of their silly expressions. Leave them alone, they’re just toys. – Kelly D. Williams
Featured above are C.I. Boys designed by Kelly D. Williams & Distrikt for Red Magic. These will probably no longer come to fruition. But do not fear, there is a limited edition Distrikt x Kelly D Williams toy coming soon. More details to follow.
